OUR
FOCUS
Lighthouse's
focus is on coastal resources and their watersheds. The team at Lighthouse
believes that healthy ecosystems are a essential part of society and that
coastal areas and their watersheds are particularly vulnerable and vitally
important.
Although
coastal lands are less than one-fifth of the inhabited land space, they
contain almost half of today's global population of five billion people.
The proportion of the world's people that will live along coastlines is
expected to increase three-quarters by mid-century. To address the challenges
of today and tomorrow (and with grateful acknowledgment to the long term
lessons learned by Coastal Resources Center of the University of Rhode
Island) we believe in the following:
- Integrated
resource management is a process that includes developing, implementing
and adapting sustainable solutions to resource use problems and conflicts.
- Work at
both local and national levels of government is a strategic necessity
with strong linkages between levels. Lighthouse's application of its
cross learning experiences provide a virtual case study-based tool kit
for clients.
- Build
constituencies that support effective resource management through public
information/awareness program.
- Develop
an open, participatory and democratic process, involving all stakeholders
in planning, implementation and longer term adherence to goals.
- Utilize
the best available information for planning and decision making. Good
programs understand and address the management implications of scientific
knowledge.
- Commit
to building capacity through short and long-term training and learning-by-doing.
- Complete
the loop between planning and implementation as quickly and frequently
as possible, using small projects that demonstrate the effectiveness
of innovative policies.
- Recognize
that programs undergo cycles of development, implementation and refinement,
building on prior successes and adapting and expanding to address new
or more complex issues.
- Set specific
targets and monitor and self-evaluate performance.
